Marlboro is US based company established by Philip Morris USA. But it has branches outside US which are run by Philip Morris International. The billboard and magazine ads of Marlboro are famous because of the Marlboro Man. Marlboro got its brand name from the original site of its London factory, “Great Marlborough Street”. Now the main modern manufacturing company of Marlboro cigarettes is sited in Virginia. Now Marlboro cigarettes are used by both male and female, though it was first introduced for females only. Later in 1950, when scientists announced that smoking can lead to lung cancer, Marlboro introduced filtered cigarettes.

In 1972, Marlboro signed a deal with the Formula One teams – BRM and Marlboro-Ford. This in turn increased the promotion of Marlboro cigarettes in 1974, Marlboro officially signed with McLaren team which was successful till 1978 and the sponsorship was ended in 1996. Along with these primary sponsorships, Marlboro has a secondary sponsorship with Ferrari. This sponsorship was then extended by Ferrari on 2005 till 2011. The promotion of Marlboro cigarettes was also carried out by other racing series like Joest Racing and Marlboro Masters Formula race.

As technology evolved, the marketing of Marlboro cigarettes also enhanced. Till present online media is the widely used method for the marketing of Marlboro cigarettes. Apart from marketing, Marlboro started selling cigarettes through internet which boomed their demand. Online selling of Marlboro cigarettes was actually carried out by third party agencies which helped them to distribute among the various parts with ease.
